Liberia is a country that was founded by American Citizens with the purpose of serving as a source for slaves from the beginning of the Colonies until the end of the Civil War, which brought slavery to an end.

According to the author, the arrival of Americans heavily disrupted culture and normal lifestyle in Liberia. Habitants that occupied roles in their society were seen as a "commodity" which had value overseas and were taken away from their families in order to bring them to work as slaves in North America. Mortality rates of Liberians who crossed the ocean were very high.

During the Scramble for Africa, the American Colonization Society encouraged Liberia to claim its independence as it no longer wanted to support slavery.

The author of the "The Scramble for Africa" in the "The American" Republic of Liberia" section argues that the story of the scramble for Africa would not be complete without a record of the Republic of Liberia. The authors argue that the purpose of the American Colonization Society is not to exploit African resources but to find new homes for African slaves.  

EXPLANATION  

Republic of Liberia is the only African colony in the United States. In 1820 a country as big as Virginia was declared on the east coast of Africa. It was about six decades before "Congo Free State". The country is very different from other European colonies.

Despite the support of President Abraham Lincoln, President James, and State Secretary Henry Clay. Liberia is not a country like most colonies in Africa. The country was founded by individuals, among them a wealthy man who freed many slaves and Quakers, who were very strict about slavery.

The author argues that the real purpose of the American Colonization Society is not to exploit African resources but to find a new home for freed African slaves in America. Liberians then choose their own form of constitution based on what the U.S. proposes. Their first president was later elected in 1948.
