the south faced many difficulties and dilemmas in its reconstruction. such a problem were carpetbaggers. they were northern politicians or financial advisors who would use the south's weakness and disorganization to their personal benefit. such things to gain would be wealth or obtaining office. to do this they would offer or assistance to influence those in power to fit their personal agenda.
but carpetbaggers were not the only problem during the reconstruction. the nation had lost nearly 620,000 young men in the war, which left the country weak as the pre-war population was 31 million.
to worsen matters, the war provided a loss of funds to the country. the confederacy had issued war bonds to fund the war. the 14th amendment invalidated these bonds, meaning they were only worth the paper they were printed on. a large percentage of southern capital was in slaves and there were 3.5 million slaves in the south, all freed at the end of the war. the 14th amendment also forbade economic reimbursement for the "value" of these slaves.
the removal of the slave structure and freeing of blacks also had a huge social change. many plantations owners will lose status as a result of losing their land and slaves. lower classes whites are now in competition with free blacks over low paying jobs which will lead to racist ideology and the rise of such groups as the kkk.
there was also an issue in deciding who would be allowed to vote in the former confederate states was a point of debate among republicans, and they were not unanimous in their approach. both the enfranchisement of african american voters and the disenfranchisement of former confederate supporters were thoroughly debated. particularly important to republicans and north carolina unionists alike was the issue of african american enfranchisement. conservative republicans were uneasy about giving the largely uneducated former slaves of the southern states widespread polling power, while radical republicans and north carolina unionist believed african american votes were the only thing standing in the way of a full confederate takeover of the state government.
the south's primary crop was cotton, and there was the loss of four full seasons of exports to french and english textile mills. also, during these four years, french and english mill owners developed sources of supply in egypt and india.
southern cotton, which was considered the best in the world, did not immediately regain the market share it had before the world. so you lose the wealth that would be gained from four harvests interrupted by the war and you lose the wealth that would be generated had southern cotton never lost its market share due to the war.
