The word normalcy/normality kicked up a great fuss in the 1920 presidential election. As is sometimes true of the American Press, that word was hotly debated. Normality is the word usually used, normalicy was the one Harding choose and the press had a field day.

No matter which word you used, it meant returning to the way things were. America has always had a propensity ever since the presidency of George Washington, for trading with foreign nations but not getting involved in their politics. Harding was no different. He was telling the American people that "not submergence in internationality, but sustainment in triumphant nationality." In other words stay out of international politics.

It was true. He was elected on that slogan.
