How did the souths economy put it at a disadvantage in the civil war

The Southern states were heavily reliant on the ability to sell their main crops of cotton, tobacco, rice, and indigo to the Union and European countries. They didn't have the industrial capacity to produce manufactured items in the quantities need by their population.
