How does the struggle between religious and secular authority affect society

Both religious and secular authorities bear a great importance in most people's lives. On the one hand, the moral and spiritual concerns that people feel (this is, a number of things than cannot be grasped by the five senses) are addressed by religion, which provides guidance and lessens the sense of uncertainty (Will I have a job tomorrow? Will my family be all right? Will my heath remain well for a long time?) resulting from the random nature of life events. On the other hand, secular authorities take care of concrete issues in the lives of people within the community by guaranteeing solutions to issues such as security, public health, education, public works, etc.

When secular and religious authorities agree over each other's duties and privileges, they bring about a high degree of well-being and prosperity for a community or even a nation. However, when they struggle to overstep the boundaries of the other's prerogatives, a likely violent conflict breaks out, and each side tries to gain the favor of as many people in the community to support their cause. This, in turn, weakens and damages the social fabric as its gets family members opposing other family members by taking sides with the secular cause, and the same goes for friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc. In summary, communities and nations become divided into two opposing groups supporting either the religious or the secular causes, which may lead to extreme violence and mistrust for the people defending the opposite cause lasting for eve a long time after the conflict has ended.

most people now work in jobs where they do one  kind  of work; they are carpenters, bankers, cooks, mechanics, and so forth. likewise, most  businesses produce  only certainkinds  of  goods  or  services, such as cars, tacos, or gardening  services. this feature of  production  is known as specialization.

from the religious point of view, the conflicts began because of the enmity between catholic and protestants. in 1649, at the insistence of baltimore, the colonial assembly approved the act of religious tolerance, the first law in the colonies granting freedom of worship, though only for christians. in 1654, however, with the protestants of maryland in the majority, the act was revoked. the almost civil war broke out and order was not restored until 1658, when lord baltimore was returned to power.

on the issue of class conflict, the chesapeake region offered few economic opportunities to contract employees who had served their term of obligation. even with the small amount of capital needed to grow tobacco, former hired servants at best became subsistence farmers, a mature class for those called to rebellion, such as those proposed by nathaniel bacon. as the number of new hired workers declined because of limited chances of progress and reports of severe treatment, they were replaced by african slaves.

from the racial point of view, after 1660, the chesapeake colonies imposed laws that defined slavery as a lifelong and hereditary condition based on race. this made slaves profitable because planters could rely not only on their work but also on their children. the slave population, which numbered four thousand in virginia and maryland in 1675, grew significantly by the end of the century.
