After WWII, Germany was partitioned into four parts for the four most prominent fighters against the Axis Allies. There was the American Sector, British Sector, French Sector, and Soviet Sector. The Soviets, having liberated Eastern Europe from Nazi Germany during the war, maintained control of Eastern Europe and Germany by simply failing to remove their troops from occupied territory once the war had ended. After having fought a very hefty and destructive war, none of the capitalist Allied forces wanted to invade Eastern Europe to liberate it from Communist control, so the Soviet Union maintained it without major foreign resistance.
