Federalists like Adams believed the federal court needed more power and Democratic-Republicans like Thomas Jefferson believed the states should have the most powerful courts. In an act to save the federal power of the court system, Adams enacted the Judiciary Act of 1801. This act gave the federal courts more power to preside, added more federal courts, and added more federal judges.
