Bleeding Kansas was a direct result of the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The goal of this law was to allow for Kansas and Nebraska to become states. However, the issue of whether or not slavery would exist in these territories was yet to be decided by Congress. Instead of Congress deciding for the citizens, Congress allowed the citizens of each territory to vote on whether or not the institution of slavery would exist in their state. The idea of letting citizens vote on laws like this is known as popular sovereignty.

This was arguably one of the biggest mistakes ever made by Congress, as the result of the Kansas-Nebraska Act include voter fraud/corruption and "Bleeding Kansas." The term "Bleeding Kansas" refers to the physical violence and death that took place between citizens in favor of slavery and citizens against the institution of slavery in Kansas.
