How did the kaiser’s abdication (giving up) of the throne affect the war effort?

When he abdicated the throne, he then fled the country.  As a result Germany lost a leader.  Germans were not sure what to do.  Some wanted to change to a democratic government while others opted to have a strong leader while others wanted a communist government.
