In what ways is a market-based economy compatible with democratic ideals?

A market based economy is compatible with democratic ideals in that both are underlined by the concept of choice. In a democratic system, people have a choice in how they are governed as they have a say through voting. In a free market, producers and consumers make choices through their production and consumption decisions respectively.
