In the diary, Peter is presented as the son of Hermann van Pels and his wife, business partners of Anne's father, Otto. Throughout her story, Anne expresses her desire to find a true friend in Peter, even attempting to build a romantic relationship with him. But those intentions eventually became frustrated.
