What was the primary way the farms in the south differed from those in the north ?

Many farms in the South produced cotton and other cash-crops because they were important to Southern economy. The Southern states also relied heavily on slaves as well. Northern agriculture focused more on food production since the North's economy was based more heavily on industry.
