In 1969, president richard nixon announced that the united states would now expect its allies to take care of their own defense, a policy known as

Vietnamization--process of transferring power from the US to the South Vietnamese

This policy would allow the US to slowly remove themselves from Vietnam. Nixon made many moves to reduce the tension of the Cold War and Vietnamization was the first of these actions.
