Africa is facing two major environmental challenges: Deforestation and Soil Degradation.

Explanation:

Deforestation refers to the cutting down of trees that are used to meet basic needs of the African population, such as chopping wood to use it as fuel for cooking and eating, clothing, shelter, agricultural elements and much more. In addition, illegal logging has been increasing in this continent, making the forests disappear gradually.

Soil Degradation refers to the erosion of soil caused by rains, wind and rivers, but most significantly because of the over-utilization of the soil for agricultural activities. People need the soil to produce their crops and feed the growing population. However, this over-use is making the soil infertile (not useful for agriculture).

I believe the challenge that needs the most immediate attention is the Soil Degradation since a rich soil is fundamental for the production and later distribution of food.
