The form of direct democracy is different from representative democracy which is commonly applied by many countries today. In a representative democracy, people elect representatives who channel their message and put it into policy. In a direct democracy, people can directly contribute to policies without representatives. Some can even dismiss officials and conduct trials. So, citizens can carry out three forms of popular action: initiative, referendum, and withdrawal. Referendums generally begin with citizens who make a petition calling for a law that is in accordance with the citizens' voices. The institutions set a time period for a valid petition and the number of signatures required. In addition, the institutions also ensure that there is a possibility of requiring signatures from various communities, especially from minorities. This form of direct democracy absolutely grants the people veto power over the laws adopted by their legislatures, as Switzerland does.
