Why might you find small stones in the stomach and gizzard?

Gizzard is basically a thick-walled muscular pouch found in the hind part of the stomach in many bird species and reptiles that is responsible for grinding food. This may contain small stones or otherwise known as gastroliths because these will aid in the mechanical breakdown of seeds and other food intakes.
