The ethical questions of whether we should apply genetic engineering to biological organisms has many dimensions. We already genetically modify food, which is controversial but common. However beyond that, we now have the ability to genetically modify human embryos to eliminate certain genetic disorders. The questions of whether we should do this arises in part from the potential inequality in the human genetic stock. The wealthy will have genetically healthy offspring, but the poor would not be able to afford genetic therapy and this would further propagate generational inequalities. In addition, there is the ethical question of what to do if the tinkering has negative consequences and who would be responsible.
