Why do activities like yoga ballet and gymnastics require better than normal flexibility

As a dancer, ballet being one of the types I take, we require an upper level of flexibility because of the demands of each of the moves required in a dance.

You have to be able to do the splits, leap, be on your toes for long periods of time, etc...

Improper flexibility would not allow your body to move without straining your muscles. You have to make sure you stretch before and after, and continue stretching to improve.

Same goes with gymnastics. You don't want to injure yourself by doing something your body is not ready for. 

In summary, it requires better flexibility that is earned over time so that you don't injure yourself. Your body has to be used to it.
