Using Piaget’s concepts of Conservation and Centration (detailed in your Powerpoints and a video), which are both part of what we observe in the way children think and problem solve in the Preoperational Stage, explain (by incorporating these concepts) what happened in this situation:
Many years ago, our then five year old daughter and five year old niece sat down to eat lunch on a Sunday afternoon and with their sandwiches each was given a small bag of Dorito’s chips. Immediately upon pouring her chips from the bag onto her plate our daughter began to cry hysterically because her she ‘only’ had 7 chips while her cousin had 8. Given that these were the last two bags we had and that this took place about 30 years ago, supermarkets were not open so we had a dilemma. My sister in law and wife looked at me and whispered, “Do something, Psychologist”. After thinking of the above concepts I reached over and smashed a few of my daughter’s chips. She stared at her plate for a few seconds and then stood up, put her hands on her hips and said to her cousin, “Hah, now I have more than you”.
How would Piaget explain this successful approach by explaining both of the concepts above in some detail, to back up your essay?
