ECLIPSE BALL
Eclipse ball was designed by combining the teamwork of volleyball, the quick spontaneity of badminton, and the excitement of tennis. Rules were designed for fun and action.
The racquet is used as an extension of the arm. If played correctly, a light touch is as important to the strategy of winning as is a fiercely hit return. Both aggressive and non-aggressive players can work well together.
OBJECT OF THE GAME:
Game is played to 21. Only the serving team can score. You must win by 3 points.
A “skunk” games is 11-0. Failure to return the ball to your opponent results in a point or a side out.
SET UP:
A team consists of 4 to 6 players typically. The court is actually a volleyball court. (30’x60’). The net height is 8’.
THE SERVE:
Rock, paper, scissors; volley, or spin the racquet to see who gets to serve. Your opponent then chooses which side of court they want to defend.
The serve must be UNDERHAND from ¾ court or further back. Be sure to call out the score when you serve. Remember: ONLY THE SERVING TEAM CAN SCORE. Rotate clockwise, like in volleyball.
SERVICE RETURN/ RALLIES:
Teamwork and passing the ball to a teammate is encouraged. Try to set each other up for the “SLAM”. You may hit the ball twice in a row; however, you cannot SCORE off a double hit. In other words, you cannot set yourself up and spike the ball, and score.
During play, the ball is allowed to bounce once in bounds any number of times (bounce, hit, bounce, hit, etc.) before it is returned to the opponent. SPECIAL RULE: You are allowed ONE double bounce opportunity per side, per volley. For example, you can’t quite reach a ball, it bounces once, bounces a second time, and you get to it and send it over. THAT IS PERFECTLY LEGAL. HOWEVER>>>>IT CANNOT HAPPEN AGAIN UNTIL THE NEXT SERVICE OR DEAD BALL OCCURS.
ALSO: The ECLIPSE Ball is usually hit with the racquet. HOWEVER…it is not against the rules for a player to use their hands, head, feet or other body parts to keep the ball in play. It IS against the rules to catch and throw the ball.
RECOVERY OPTIONS:
If the ball lands IN BOUNDS, then, (for example) hits the bleachers, the ball is still in play. If trying to return a ball that is OUT OF BOUNDS, you are allowed to hit the ball three times consecutively.
A player may NOT enter the opposite team’s court in ANY WAY to recover the ball. LIKEWISE, you may not, AT ANY TIME, go under the net to play a ball.
