The negative effect or the weakness of this extrinsic motivation is once you take off the reward, motivation would be completely gone.

As a counterpart, intrinsic motivation can make people more committed to goals, because you desire to accomplish something is developed by yourself, without external rewards, that's why this type of motivation is the hardest to achieve, because you need to have self awareness of your thoughts and actions.
