Activity
On the lab counter locate three dishpans or large finger
bowls full of water. One bowl, located on the right, should be
marked “Cold" (it should be about 10° C); another bowl, located on
the left, should be marked "Warm” (it should be about 40–45° C);
and the middle bowl should be marked “Room Temperature.” Place
one hand in the cold dish and the other in the warm dish and let
them adjust to the temperature for a few minutes. If your hand be-
gins to ache in the cold water, you may remove it for a short time,
but try to keep it in the cold water for as long as possible during the
adjustment time. After your hands have equilibrated, place them
both in the room temperature water and describe to your lab part-
ner the temperature (cold, warm, hot) of the water as sensed by
each hand. How does the hand that was in cold water feel in the
room temperature water, and how does the hand that was in warm
water feel in the room temperature water? Record your results.
