What percentage of the general population is likely to have sensory loss?

About 486 million people worldwide are affected by hearing loss, and 38 million out of the entire affected population are children.

According to statistics about 900 million people will be suffering from hearing loss by 2050.

Some of the common causes of hearing loss include aging, injury, genetic, birth complications, drug use, exposure to excessive noise, infectious diseases and so on.

However, 60% of childhood hearing loss occurs because it was not prevented.  Also, Approximately 1.1 billion young people worldwide are at the risk of hearing loss because of exposure to noise, especially noise from recreational centers. Hearing loss not addressed costs the world about US$150 billion annually.

However, if government and private organizations intervene to prevent hearing loss, it will certainly bring great benefit to the people.  

Early detection of hearing loss would benefit individual and they can be assisted with: use of hearing aids, captioning and sign language and many more.    

In the UK only, there are about 11 million people with hearing loss. It is one of the most common disabilities in the UK.  The available statistics shows that among UK adult population, one in six is affected by hearing loss. 8 million of the adult population were age 60 and above.
