Food moves from one organ to the next through muscle action called peristalsis. The smooth muscle is responsible for movement of food by peristalsis and mechanical digestion by segmentation. In some regions, the circular layer of smooth muscle enlarges to form sphincters, circular muscles that control the opening and closing of the lumen (such as between the stomach and small intestine). Rib cage muscles Abdominal muscles The diaphragm is the main musculoskeletal muscle involved in respiration. As you can see there are two different muscles. Digestion and Respiration are two total different things. There is no muscle that operates both.
