Reviews of studies conducted in different parts of the county have shown that there are significant differences in medical care received by persons according to their racial or ethnic background and their age. What can healthcare practitioners do to stop this from happening? Understand and be aware of their own prejudices and make sure they’re behaving fairly when treating patients. Understand and recognize other staff members’ prejudices and reprimand them publicly when they exhibit this behavior. Understand and be aware that patients are from diverse backgrounds and stop treating patients against whom they are prejudiced. Understand and be aware of patients’ racial backgrounds before seeing them so they can hide any feelings of prejudice when treating them.
