How would you respond to a mother's concerns in the following scenario? Michelle is almost five. She is in a language immersion preschool. Her mother is concerned that Michelle does not seem to be learning to read as quickly as her older sister, who went to an English-only preschool. The older sister was reading by the time she turned five. Michelle's sister also had a larger English vocabulary.

Remind her that children develop at different rates, so there is probably another reason Michelle is not reading.

Say that children may take longer to master both languages, but they often do become better at languages than their peers.

Tell her that reading is not developmentally appropriate before five.

Say that most children are fluent in both languages by Michelle's age, but since she is not, maybe she should switch schools.
