What does it typically mean when you find nits(lice eggs) at the tips of hair? (not at scalp)

Nits on hair tips typically mean that they are empty egg cases, since they are 1/2 inches (1 cm) or more away from the scalp. However, if they aren’t empty cases they wouldn’t survive over 2 weeks.
