Explain the differences and similarities between attitudes and values with respect to their role in health

Well, statistically it’s an ironclad certainty, rich countries (except for the U.S.) and rich people have the best healthcare.

Generally men avoid seeing a doctor as long as possible, whereas women tend to schedule an appointment at the first sniffle, if they have employer-based insurance or national healthcare.

New Age flibbertigibbets (like Gwyneth Paltrow) do a lot of stupid unscientific things that are bad for them, or at least do them no good, such as homeopathy. If alternative medicine worked it would be called medicine.

I had a very very Catholic relative who prayed while his children died. He was quite wealthy, too. Modern medicine — prescription drugs and surgery, e.g. — might have been a better idea, because Yahweh just didn’t come through.

And of course the hypocrisy runs both ways — there are all those imams and ayatollahs who call for a return to the 14th century and decry Western values, but they all want F-20 stealth fighters, and if their wife has cancer, send her straight to MGH or Mayo.

Germaphobes also do their children no favors. Children are supposed to get licked on the mouth by dogs and eat cookies that fell on the floor and play in the dirt. Get them all their recomended vaccinations, of course (anti-vaxxers aren’t just stupid, they’re evil, whooping cough, for example, is a horrible way to die), but let them get dirty, don’t use super-anti-bacterials on your kitchen counters, just soap and water, adopt a dog or two, and allow them to live in the biome they were born into. Then maybe they won’t have allergies and asthma as teenagers.

But in the greater scheme of things, a good family doctor is your best defense.
