Perception refers to how people recognize or perceive and interpret sensory information. Studying people's perception involves knowing what a stimuli is (distal and proximal). If an object or a particular event draws out a response from an organism, through his behavior or senses, then this object or event is what you call a "stimuli."

Distal Stimuli- this is the stimuli in the organism's environment

Proximal Stimuli- this is the stimuli that is represented in the mind of the organism.

The Computational Approach uses the features and cues in the environment in order to turn the distal stimuli into a proximal stimuli. This all happens, of course, in the mind. This process is backed by the "bottom-up" method. In this process, the sensory data is first taken to the retina, then the data will be transmitted to the visual cortex and processed in order to form the visual experience.
