During one hour of hard training an athlete may expend 30% of his or her total 24-hour energy output, therefore they require foods high in carbohydrates. They also need to replace certain elements in their body through diets such as potassium, and magnesium that are lost in significant amounts in the sweat. Athletes also need foods high in protein. Proteins are degraded and amino acids are oxidized during physical exercise. Proteins are also retained during muscle building training hence athletes have bigger muscles.
