All three states have an abundance of bedrock made of limestone.  This limestone is prone to dissolve in the presence of acid rain (primarily carbonic acid formed from rainfall and CO2).  Over the courses of years and years and years this acidic water permeates through layers of soil and eventually reaches bedrock, dissolving it as it continues to travel further into the ground to reach the water table.  Over time, the amount of water reaching the bedrock can create large cave systems that contribute to the transportation of ground water and sinkholes if that subterranean water is drawn down.
