The development of alternative energy sources would help the United States to wean itself from foreign oil.

Alternative energy sources include a wide class of forms of energy production, in addition to renewable ones, for example by including energy produced through nuclear power plants.  

The term became common in the seventies, following the oil crises of 1973 and 1979, which had clearly shown the problems posed by an energy world too dependent on oil and, in general, on the supply of fossil sources.

In the last thirty years many human and economic resources have been invested in research in this direction. In addition, sensitivity to the energetic future of humanity, the so-called global energy problem, is increasing to date. According to forecasting models such as the Hubbert model, global oil production may be near or have exceeded the peak of world production.

Therefore, the only way in which the United States would no longer depend on foreign oil to supply its energy demand is through the development of new alternative energy sources, such as nuclear power plants, hydroelectric dams, or centers of wind energy, for example.
