Tsunami actually means tidal wave. These extremely high and fast moving waves appear after a strong earthquake appears on the ocean floor. When there's an earthquake, initially the water starts to retract as it is consumed by the cracks that appeared on the ocean floor, but after that initial retracting the huge amount of pressure pushes the water back up and that results in huge waves with great speed that are very often with devastating consequences for the people and life in general along the shores where the tsunami hits.
