Even though he was not the first to come up with this theory, he was the first one that managed to gather solid evidence and support it. His theory is based on numerous pieces of evidence all of which prove his idea, and some of them are the mid-ocean ridges, matching continental margins, matching mountain chains on different continents, and fossils.

The mid-ocean ridges prove that the tectonic plates are moving away from each other and that new crust is constantly forming. The matching continental margins prove that the continents were once merged together. The matching mountain chains on different continents prove that they formed at the same place because of the same process but were torn apart as the continents moved apart. The fossil remains of the exact same species on continents that are far away and have no connection prove that they were once part of a single landmass as it is impossible for the exact same organism to evolve in different places, or to keep the exact same traits in totally different environments.
