The display of the Confederate flag, which was the symbol for the American South when it broke away from the Union as its own country, continues to create controversy and contention. Only recently did South Carolina take down the flag from outside its state capitol, and Mississippi's state flag still has the Confederate battle flag in the left corner. Some people argue that the flags should not be allowed as a state symbol, since the Confederate flag is associated with slavery and racism in many people's minds.
