This all came to an end with the rise of the Macedonian Kingdom that turned into a Macedonian Empire. With Phillip II of Macedon laying good foundations for Alexander by reforming the army, including the Paeonian cavalry, and neutralizing the Greeks, Alexander with his military knowledge and courage set his sights to the east. Despite being heavily outnumbered and all the odds being against him, Alexander and his Macedonian phalanx supported by the Paeonian cavalry went up against the massive Persian army which was also supported by Greek soldiers.

It took several battles, in which bit by bit Alexander was gaining ground, and in the final one at Gaugamela which was the biggest one of all he made the decisive win. This ended the Persian Empire for the time being, while made the Macedonian Empire the largest in the world.
