The demographic transition model has five stages, each with its own set of characteristics when it comes to the population. The first stage is stage 1, and this is the basal stage where the people still leave in primitive and very bad conditions. While this stage has been much more widespread in the past, it still can be found in some countries even nowadays.

Basically, the birthrates are very high, and the reason for that is that there is no guarantee that any of the children will survive adulthood, so the more the better. Another reason is that the population is engaged in agriculture, thus more children mean more labor force in the family. The death rates too are very high though, with a very large percentage of children aged 1 or less are dying, and the average life span is very low (in the 40's), with the reasons being the terrible living conditions and lack of healthcare. Because of these two traits, the population growth is very slow, or the population stagnates.
