This system basically put people in a particular social group from their birth and that was about it when it comes to their chances to prosper in life, with the ones born in the top castes have all the advantages, while the ones in the bottom ones having none of it. It was not just about opportunities though, but it was also not allowed to have social mobility and progress through the castes, not even through marriage or exceptional abilities.

The reason as to why this was the case was that this system was created that the society is specialized and all things are covered and done. Each caste had its own purpose and responsibility toward society. The people were limited when it came to social mobility because of fear that constant changes will disrupt the functioning of the system and that the society will crumble.
