There are many effects of deforestation in Latin America. This region is responsible for more than half of deforestation that occurs worldwide. One of the most important consequences is the loss of biodiversity. American rainforests are home to 1,500 species of birds, 500 species of mammals, and 2,000 species of butterflies. Many plants in the rainforest have been particularly helpful to humans; for example they've been used to create cancer-fighting drugs. Humans risk a great deal if these species are lost. Deforestation also increases the risk of drought. Rainforests release water into the atmosphere, and fewer trees mean that less water is released. This has already led to more droughts in Brazil, which may lead to even more desertification over time.
