The shape of the land's surface is called
topography. For any point on the surface, its
height above sea level is called its elevation. The
difference in elevation between the high and low
points on a landscape is called relief. A rugged
mountain range has high relief, a flat plain has
low relief.
How can a flat map show a landscape's hills and valleys?
Topographic maps give a more precise representation of the surface with contour
lines. Each contour line connects points of equal elevation on the landscape.
Contour lines are "stacked up on a map to visualize the land surface. Some
topographic indicate relief through shading. What a Relief!
