There are two ways that a desert pavement can form: As previously discussed, desert pavement forms by deflation of smaller sediments and the selective retention of larger rocks, resulting in a coarse-grained surface. Alternatively, it can also form when wind-blown, fine-grained sediments are deposited atop preexisting gravel and infiltrate below them over time. This process results in the deposition of a thickening layer of fine-grained sediment below the gravel. In this case, the desert pavement is lifted, or inflated, over time. Label the block diagrams below with the correct step in the desert pavement formation process. The upper three diagrams represent the process of surface deflation.
