There are two ways that a desert pavement can form: As previously discussed, desert pavement forms by deflation of smaller sediments and the selective retention of larger rocks, resulting in a coarse-grained surface. Alternatively, it can also form when wind-blown, fine-grained sediments are deposited atop preexisting gravel and infiltrate below them over time. This process results in the deposition of a thickening layer of fine-grained sediment below the gravel. In this case, the desert pavement is lifted, or inflated, over time.
