Explanation: What each society needs it a solidarity of its members. In traditional European society what cemented society was a Christian faith, Christian morals ...common people believed that the social order is a divine will. But USA is a society founded in the end of 18th century when the spirit of time was dominated by the ideals of Enlightenment. Even though Americans or Europeans were not completely secularized, they believed (much more than in Middle Ages) they can control their lives. In this respect they were influenced by ideas of John Locke or J-J Rousseau. Declaration of independence is an expression par excellence of the spirit of Enlightenment but it was hypocritical anyway because the term "people" was applied exclusively on white men (women and black people were excluded). This had to be corrected by constitutional amendments and by the fight for civil rights. So, declaration of independence and constitution preached solidarity, natural rights for everybody without really producing solidarity because black people and women were not included. Of course, people became increasingly aware of that.
