What was the basis of ghana’s wealth?

Ghana's wealth came from abundant gold which was mined during the 9th and 11th century. The country was so wealthy that dogs' collars were made of golden while horses slept on extravagant carpets and had silken rope halters.

The kings of Ghana became to be known as the wealthiest kings in the world due to display of wealth on animals. Ghana also attained its riches through trade and battering of goods. It bartered gold, ivory, and slaves for salt from Arabs. Other goods that were traded included books, swords, and horses from North Africans and European.
