The countries like Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, are pretty poor in natural resources, meaning that the majority of their energy is imported from other nations, especially from the ones nearby, such as Russia and Indonesia. North Korea has a political system that makes it closed to the world and trade, thus it is using its own natural resources to the maximum, mostly the hydro-power and coal. China is one of the biggest energy consumers in the world, and while it has lot of natural resources on its own, it also imports a lot, especially from Russia.
