The fighting between UNITA and the government of Angola ended with the death of the UNITA leader.

Angola had attained independence in 1975 following overthrowing of the Portuguese prime minister but due to social, political differences and other challenges, it was faced with leadership dilemma. UNITA and MPLA had thought for the independence but after Angola attained it, UNITA backed by United State and South African armies were in the power struggle battle with the MPLA.  

MPLA had assistance from the Soviet Union and countries it had alliances with. The death of UNITA leader in 2002 lead prompted the party to abandon the war, and they later participated in the general elections where they won 51 seats out of 220.
