Trade and commerce were one of the biggest factors that contributed to the growth and development of the cities, and the European cities were not an exception. It is no wander, that most of the cities that developed were along the coast, and this was because this cities were able to make a port, and through it to send ships for trade across the world. Because of all the expensive and very demanded products that came into the ports of this cities, they were becoming very wealthy and powerful, and as they were developing more and more, extra jobs were opening, and that was very attractive for the people to move in there.

Early cities served as centers of trade for their local neighborhoods and farmlands. As human societies grew, cities became centers for shipping products across the world. Societies developed trade routes across land and over seas. The Silk Road was a major factor in the growth of European cities; trade routes brought silk and spices from Asia. European population centers became places where citizens could purchase and use new materials and products. This encouraged city growth.

Later developments in manufacturing and industry, spurred by better resources, created more jobs in cities. The guild system allowed new city residents to collaborate and work together to support each other better.
