The 'hustle-bustle' and the constant traffic make cities well, cities. The crazy amount of traffic lights, to the culture within them tie cities together as a whole. If you've ever been to San Francisco, you'd understand what makes a city a city. The great food, never running out of activities to partake in, cities never sleep. There are some downfalls to city life though; constant traffic, higher crime rates due to higher populations, and higher living expenses. Especially in places like New York or California. Cities are unique, in every which way. From the skyscrapers to every big event and ribbon cutting that's ever happened; cities are a big deal and the gateway(s) to a lavish lifestyle, the "American Dream"
