The phone at mary’s house has been ringing for three minutes nonstop, but she ignores it. she has watched a news item on the tv that has made her freeze with panic. three days before, four men entered a jewelry store carrying mallets and guns and ordered the people inside to get on the ground. among the people in the store was sergeant bruce prothero, a police officer and father of five who had a second job working as a security guard at the mall. the men grabbed almost $500,000 worth of jewelry and sprinted out; sergeant prothero dashed after them. in the mall parking lot, the men shot him three times from the car. sergeant prothero died as the men sped away. what do you think is going through mary’s mind when she sees her two sons wanted for arrest on the television? how did you feel when you read that wes and tony might be responsible for this crime?

Read the excerpt from "mother tongue." lately, i’ve been giving more thought to the kind of english my mother speaks. like others, i have described it to people as “broken” or “fractured” english. but i wince when i say that. it has always bothered me that i can think of no other way to describe it other than “broken,” as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed, as if it lacked a certain wholeness and soundness. what best supports the inference that tan believes nonstandard english is no less valid than standard english? tan spends a lot of time thinking about her mother’s “fractured” english. tan has trouble thinking of descriptive words when she is writing. tan’s american education makes it difficult for her to understand her mother. tan winces when she describes her mother’s english as “broken.”
