The main conflict of the story is Antigone's desire to bury her brother Polyneices against the wishes of King Creon. As Ismene is also a sibling, Antigone expects Ismene to help her fulfill this mission in order to make sure that Polyneices burial takes place according to tradition. However, Ismene is too scared, and does not want to help. This, according to Antigone, will earn Ismene "the loathing of the dead."
