We use paraphrasing when we take a passage and put it in our own words. It is actually using an author's idea but putting their idea in our own words, and  still the credit goes to the author. We should use paraphrasing when the quote is very lengthy to memorize. So we can paraphrase it in our own words, but keeping in mind that the information given in the quote is not lost.
